Each year, a person generates 76 Kg of food that ends up in the garbage, either because it has been cooked in excess or because the expiration date has been reached without the food being consumed or cooked. According to the FAO, it is estimated that one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally –about 1.3 billion tons per year- causing huge economic losses and wasting natural resources. Only in Europe, around 88 million tons of food are wasted every year, with associated costs amounting to 143,000 million euros. According to data from the Ministerio de Agricultura y Pesca, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente (MAPAMA), fruit is the most wasted food in Spain, followed by vegetables, dairy products, beverages, bread and meat products.
