Agrifood waste for packaging production

Managing and treating packaging waste represents a considerable global challenge. In response to this issue, the EU Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste has been revised several times since its initial adoption in 1994.

This Directive establishes regulations aimed at ensuring that packaging marketed in the European Union meets specific requirements, as well as taking measures to prevent and manage packaging waste. The objectives of this Directive, as established in (EU) 2018/852/EC, include making all plastic packaging recyclable by 2030 and reducing packaging waste by 15% by 2030 compared to 2010 levels.
In March 2024, the European Parliament reached a provisional political agreement on the revision of the proposal for the Regulation on Packaging and Packaging Waste. The aim of this review is to address the growing problem of packaging waste in the EU and ensure that packaging introduced to the market meets specific requirements in line with the principles of waste prevention and promotion of the circular economy. It is important to note that this review excludes compostable plastic packaging and those with a plastic content of less than 5% of their total weight from its objectives.
