Compostable packaging for IV and V range products: What challenge do we face?

Consumption habits of today's society have changed in recent years, emerging a tendency to choose those products that are immediately available, both when it comes to purchasing and consuming them

In the area of food products, these new preferences have resulted in an increase in products that require little or no handling by the consumer.
These are, on the one hand, IV range or fresh-cut products, which are already cut and washed so that they can be consumed without cooking, and those in the pre-prepared convenience food range, which are ready to eat with minimal preparation or heating beforehand. These new preferences are confirmed by consumption data, which in the case of fresh-cut products showed a growth of 8.96% in 2022 compared to the previous year, according to a study by the international consultancy firm NielsenIQ (1). On the other hand, consumption of pre-prepared convenience food in Spanish households reached 682.656 tonnes in 2022, 3.5% more than in the previous year, according to the latest report by the Spanish Association of Ready-To-Eat Meals Manufacturers (ASEFAPRE) (2).
