Since its inception back in 2008 in the midst of the economic crisis (which in itself is of enormous merit, it must be said), Empack Madrid has stood out as an unmissable event in the Spanish packaging industry calendar.

It has undergone a notable evolution over the years, becoming a key reference for professionals and companies in the sector. What has contributed to its rise?

In its earlier editions, the fair focused mainly on the presentation of products and packaging solutions. However, over time, it has evolved to comprehensively address the challenges and trends driving this industry. Currently, Empack Madrid not only offers a platform for the exhibition of innovations, but has also established itself as an event conducive to exchanging knowledge and networking, and has opened up to content that attracts the main brands.

As for the most anticipated developments, attention has been especially focused on sustainability. Leading companies present solutions that not only optimise packaging efficiency, but also reduce environmental impact; with significant advances expected to be seen in the implementation of biodegradable materials and more sustainable production techniques.

At Empack 2023, we also want to focus on automation and industry 4.0, since digital interconnection stands as a catalyst for transformation. Automation is no longer an option, but now a necessity in the packaging industry, and in industry in general. The ability to integrate systems, collect real-time data and apply predictive analytics has revolutionised production processes.

Industry 4.0 is not only about adopting advanced technologies, it is also about building a flexible, adaptable infrastructure. The ability to respond in real time to changes in demand, optimisation of supply chains and reduction in operating costs are some of the benefits that automation brings.

However, the path to full implementation of Industry 4.0 is not without its challenges. Initial investment, staff training and cybersecurity are all aspects that need careful attention. Additionally, transitioning to a fully automated environment requires a solid strategy and long-term vision.

In the context of packaging, automation improves both production efficiency and leads to more flexibility in customisation and adaptation to specific market demands. Thus, investing in automation is now considered as an unavoidable necessity for companies if they want to compete, as well as to stand out in an increasingly dynamic and demanding market.
