According to a recent JRC study (Exploring the EU plastic value chain: a material flow analysis), around 19% of plastic waste was recycled in 2019 (4.5 megatonnes of recycled plastics were consumed), and it is estimated that this rate will be increased a 45% by 2025.

The remaining plastic ends up in landfills, incinerators, or unleashed into the environment, releasing an estimated 50-80 million tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere every year. Oceans and seas bear the brunt of this plastic pollution, harming marine life and ecosystems.
