In 2023, sustainability remains the main focus of the packaging industry. About a year ago, the Royal Decree on Packaging and Packaging Waste (RD 1055/2022) came into force, setting crucial targets for reduction, reuse, recyclability, compostability and incorporation of recycled materials in packaging

These targets have generated a great deal of interest throughout the industry, which is looking for ways to meet these requirements.

To address these challenges, companies are seeking collaboration with partners specializing in sustainability. Therefore, almost a year after the approval of the Royal Decree on Packaging, ITENE returns to the EMPACK fair to respond to its requirements, which pose both challenges and new opportunities for the industry.

Within the framework of the fair, which will take place on 29 and 30 November at IFEMA (Madrid), we will continue with the SustainTalks by ITENE during which we will chat with sustainability ambassadors who are leading the transition to the circular economy in their companies. On this occasion, the conference will be entitled 'Technologies and strategies to face the change' and will be held in the Empack Room on November 29th, from 12.30 to 14.30 hours.

In this activity we will solve some doubts that are in the minds of the packaging value chain, for example, what sustainable packaging options are currently available in the market, what criteria should be followed to choose an individual or collective Waste Management System (SIRAP or SCRAP), how is the implementation of the plastic tax going on, or if the new European Packaging Regulation will be more or less restrictive than the current regulation?

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about our capabilities to help them adapt their packaging to the requirements of the circular economy, for example, with the development of new sustainable and advanced packaging materials that are mono-material, thus promoting their recyclability; the adaptation of cellulosic materials to have better properties; or the development of compostable multilayer flexible plastics, among many others.

We will also discuss other topics, such as the application of eco-design, the introduction of recycled material in packaging, as well as technologies for the recovery of organic waste or post-consumer packaging and its transformation into new packaging materials. We will also explain how we validate new developments and how we respond to the requirements of safety, design and functionality in packaging. We will also show how we evaluate whether a package is recyclable, reusable or compostable - the latter by means of tests in our laboratories, recognized by the main certifying entities - and we provide solutions to make it so.

We invite you to explore our program and proposals at the EMPACK fair through the internal pages of Infopack magazine, and we look forward to meeting you at our booth!
