Packaging plays a critical role in the food supply chain

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) (1), while world hunger is increasing, approximately one third of all food produced worldwide is lost or wasted each year, equivalent to more than 728 billion euros. Of this amount of food, 88 million tonnes would correspond to annual waste in Europe. According to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (2), fruit and vegetables are the most widely wasted food in the world, along with fish, cereals and oilseeds, meat, and dairy products.


Waste occurs throughout the food chain, but in industrialized countries, the stages that are most impacted are households (53%) and processing (19%). In addition, throwing food away also means throwing away all the resources applied to produce that food, generating no environmental, economic, or social impact whatsoever.
