The European Union has been working since 2015 on action plans and strategies to lead Member States and the European industries towards a circular economy model. This model consists of transforming and taking advantage of the waste produced by industrial or domestic activities as new resources or raw materials.

In terms of packaging, one of the key objectives for 2030 is that all plastic packaging placed on the EU market must be reusable or recycled in a cost-effective way, as specified in the European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy published in 2018.



Recyclability, defined as the transformation of waste within a production process for its initial purpose or for other purposes (including organic recycling) according to Directive 94/62/EC, reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfill or is incinerated and avoids the extraction of raw materials.
