Circularity in pharmaceutical packaging is a key strategy to achieve this balance, promoting reuse, recycling and waste reduction, where ecodesign plays a key role as a tool for reducing environmental impact and optimizing resource use. This article explores the ecodesign methodology applied to pharmaceutical packaging and the European and national legislation that regulates packaging and its waste.
Legislation plays a crucial role in promoting circularity in pharmaceutical packaging. In Europe, in the field of sustainability, the main regulations affecting packaging, including pharmaceutical packaging, are Directive 94/62/EC and Directive (EU) 2018/852, which amends the former. Directive 94/62/EC establishes the rules for the management of packaging and packaging waste in the European Union, with the aim of preventing waste generation and promoting reuse, recycling and recovery. Subsequently, Directive (EU) 2018/852 amends the previous directive to include more ambitious recycling targets and measures to reduce the environmental impact of packaging.
