In November 2021, a prestigious jury from brands including Chanel, Dior, Interparfums and many more came together to judge the PCD Innovation Awards. The time has now come to unveil the winners.

Skincare - Premium - Award Winners

 

• ECO-Smart Aluminium Sample Tube – REN Clean Skincare

The Eco Smart Aluminium Sample Tube provides a more premium sampling experience for consumers in a creative way with a smart, break off re-closable nozzle solution. This pack has helped bring solution to the issues generated by sampling, finding an eco-smart alternative. The pack was designed using highly recyclable material in a format which is easy to recycle in various waste streams.

• LANCOME ABSOLUE SERUM 30ML

Lancôme has designed a refillable bottle that at the same time keeps the premiumness and desirability for a high-end brand. The jury particularly appreciated the successful equation between this beautiful object and the success of the eco design. It is a nice technical execution in the work of ergonomics and its rechargeability.

 

 

• PURE GOLD RADIANCE CREAM – La Prairie Group AG

One of the major issues of this packaging is to respond to the environmental concerns of our time while maintaining a luxurious appearance and a graceful gesture of usage. For this purpose, a refillable packaging was developed, consisting of a solid outer case and a glass inner part.

• BIOTHERM Cera Repair 50ml – L’Oréal Biotherm

Biotherm has a strong environmental commitment for the renovation of their iconic jar. The packaging has to respect as much as possible the environment, that’s why this jar contains 40% of recycled glass and the cap is light weighted and made of 100% PCR plastic.

• Soothing skin recovery cream TOLERANCE CONTROL – Pierre Fabre

This gem of technology has succeeded in the feat of miniaturising Sterile Cosmetics in a small 40ml format, ultra-practical and perfectly suited to the use of a facial treatment. This new anti-contamination pump without return air guarantees the highest level of tolerance and safety: pure formulas with 0% preservative.

• L'Oréal Paris Men expert 50ml WIKO RESTAGE

L’Oréal has provided a cylinder bottle which can meet the ergonomics requirement of consumers, with the pump embedded in the bottle as a integrity. The damping lock pump makes the feeling premium and comfortable.

 

 

• PAPER BOTTLE LIPIKAR La Roche Posay - L'Oréal

The aim of this pack was to transform plastic bottles into paper bottles to reduce the environmental impact of the packaging. This was achieved designing a thin layer paper bottle with recycled plastic, keeping the functionality for our consumers and integrity of the formula.

 

 

• L’Oréal Paris ampoule in cream pump jar 50ml Skincare Mass Market

This pack was designed to fill in the gap if the market of square airless jar, which provide high perceive valves. This product is eco-friendly as its full plastic structure of pump system.

 

 

Make Up - Premium - Award Winners

 

• YSL RPC & RVS Holiday 21

Each part of this design is unique because the decoration pattern is completely random. The surface to be decorated is aluminium, the designers had to ensure a perfect adhesion with the substrate, while keeping the desired aesthetical effect.

 

 

• Curator Eyeshadow Refill/Curator Eyeshadow Refillable Palette – Hourglass Cosmetics

Eyeshadow refills and refillable palettes are not a new concept in the beauty industry. This is why Hourglass wanted to modernise the refill experience in a disruptive way. The system had to be functional and easy to use. The concept was based on the idea of curating and personalising a palette to suit individual tastes.

• GO-CLUTCH + MINIROSSO by VALENTINO Beauty

An ultra-luxury compact case for the new Valentino make-up brand. The pack had to be not only a 2 in 1 customisable and refillable product, but also a fashion accessory in the image of Valentino.

 

• My Armani To Go

The main challenge of designing this pack was the development of the refill easy to close which ensure a good tightness.

• Gucci Rouge de beauté brillant - COTY

The aim of this design was to develop a supported lipstick for soft formula of vintage inspiration. The pack has a high definition print of an iconic Gucci pattern for the cap and a copy of the Gucci pattern on the base.

 

• Good Vibes Mascara - Special Recognition Award

It is a favorite of the jury for the product Good Vibes Mascara by Trestique which is a refillable mascara that features an eyelash curler incorporated into the hood.

• L’OREAL PARIS BALM NOIR MASCARA

This is a luxurious plastic mascara bottle with thick bottom, fully transparent to optimize the bulk shade perception by customers. L’Oréal unveiled a brand new formula mixing healthy make up action through high performance applicator.

 

 

Fragrances - Women - Award Winners

 

• Les Extraits – Louis Vuitton

On receipt of Frank Gehry’s model, the challenge was to respect the artist’s work without compromising on the shape of the bonnet. The juries appreciated the challenges met on this design with a focus on the materials and a very good quality of execution of this model. The rechargeability of this product allows the creation of a highly valued hood that can be preserved.

 

 

• PARIS-ÉDIMBOURG LES EAUX DE CHANEL – EAU DE TOILETTE

The brief is fulfilled thanks to this innovative material which has sensory properties, a singular sound and is very close to the cap historically used on this DES EAUX DE CHEL range. Innovation and environment are in the spotlight, introduction of FSC wood in the inner layer and bio-based materials requiring very rigorous injection parameters, a real technological challenge taken up by VPI partner of Chanel.

 

 

• RIVIÈRES DE CARTIER

In designing three refillable bottles with a lighter bottle made of PCR glass, Cartier is consciously limiting its carbon footprint. With the same environmental objective in mind, Cartier’s carboard packaging, obtained from sustainably managed forests, is made from one single piece of cardboard and is now smaller in size.

• BVLGARI ALLEGRA SPETTACOLORE

Spettacolore is the new launch among the BVLGARI ALLEGRA collection. The bottle is an interpretation of the building elements of jewelry masterpieces. For this collection, the use of glass and sustainable carboards had to be maximised.

 

 

• MIU MIU Eaux A La Mode - COTY

Meticulous work to mimic Miu Miu high quality fabric, by ensuring a perfect registration of debossing and silk-screening patterns and achieving a very precise colour consistency in the printing process.

 

 

Fragrances - Men - Award Winner

 

• PHANTOM EDT – PUIG

The initial brief has always been a robot and its universe. Given the important eco-design aspect at Puig, this product was quickly declined in a refillable version in its development. PHANTOM is also the first connected perfume product with easy access to the universe of this new pillar.

• KENZO HOMME EAU DE TOILETTE INTENSE - LVMH

The aim of this pack is to be the first premium perfume with the most eco-designed choice of raw materials. The cap is 30% made of PCR plastic.

 

• Ralph's Club - L'Oréal

To capture the essence of Ralph’s Club, the designers developed a flacon that shares the modernity and unconventional elegance of the scent itself. The masculine, chic bottle, with cool gunmetal touches and dark smoky glass, is at once sensual and mysterious.

• Jean Paul Gaultier - Scandal Pour Homme Eau de Toilette - PUIG

The Scandal Pour Homme bottle needed to be refillable and have a specific design around the boxing world. The objective was to adapt an existing screw neck with a screwable pump for a new Masterbrand product in order to be in line with budget and timing.

• ONE TWIST HAIR COLOR L’OREAL PARIS MEN EXPERT

The design has been improved especially for the tightness between the developer and the hair dye by using two sealing skirts. The shape of the brush has been designed for men hair and kept the shape after the nozzle breakage.

• DOYPACK MONO PE – HAIRCARE ELSEVE L’OREAL PARIS

L’Oréal approached this project with the objective to first reduce plastic use and then convert it to a recyclable packaging for pouch. The new flexible pouch saves over 75% plastic consumption over the rigid container and is designed to be recycled thanks to its mono-material composition.

• N°5 PARFUM BACCARAT 2021ml

N°5 Parfum Baccarat Grand Extrait is the most precious interpretation of N°5, housed in a monumental 2021 ml bottle crafted out of Baccarat crystal.

 

 

• COLLECTOR BOX FOR N°5

The brief was to create a second-skin for the 100ml N5 fragrance with the aim of making it in vegetal pulp. The shape is pure, and there has been no compromise on the protection of the glass bottle.

 

 

• CALENDAR FOR N°5

The French luxury Maison celebrated new year’s with Chanel N°5 fragrance, launching its first advent calendar. “The format is atypical for this type of material; to date it has been used for platforms and packs adjusted to bottle shapes, but to our knowledge, this is the first advent calendar made from pulp.”

• The Ritual of Advent Village – Ritual Cosmetics B.V.

The technical innovation lies in the combination of the individually sized products with the window patched multiple-sized secondary packaging, increasing brand awareness and reflecting the special Christmas atmosphere.
